Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month celebrates the significant role Filipinos have played in American history. Officially recognized by Congress in 2009, the month is celebrated in October to commemorate the first recorded landing of Filipinos in America in 1587. Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the United States and have a history of living in Alaska going back over 200 years. Known as “Alaskeros,” they were instrumental in working the canning industry and helping unionize cannery workers. Today Filipino Americans make up one of the largest ethnic groups in Alaska.
