Mat-Su College: Career development

A guide that lists library resources useful in the career-planning process.

Free tutor.com resume help

The Alaska State Library pays for a service called tutor.com (sometimes called Live Homework Help). It has live, online tutors that can provide free help with math, writing, science, career development, and more. These tutors are available from noon until 2 AM.

To use tutor.com for career develpment help simply visit the State Library Electronic Doorway page. From there, click "Go To Live Homework Help." At the Live Homework Help page, In the Topic drop-down menu choose "Job Help." In the Subject drop-down menu, choose from the following subjects that the tutors can help with:

  • finding a job
  • writing a resume
  • writing a cover letter
  • preparing for an interview

Then just answer a few more simple questions and click "CONNECT NOW." A tutor will help you out!

Print and video items in the library catalog

The library has a lot of books and movies on careers, interviews, cover letters, and resume writing. Use the library catalog to find these items.

The library catalog is a searchable list of items held in our library and other libraries throughout the state.

Click here to enter the library catalog. You can also click the "Just Us" tab on the library homepage.

In the library catalog you can enter search terms for whatever topic you want to find books or videos on. One really good search term is vocational guidance. Just try the name of a career or field of study, plus vocational guidance, like this: math vocational guidance.

If you find some books that look good, you can make a note of their name or call number and ask for help at the library desk.

But sometimes your search will not bring back many results:

No results when searching just Mat-Su college

When this happens, change the drop-down menu from "UAA Mat-Su" to "All Collections" in the upper left, then press the search button again. Now your search will include items from other libraries. Use the "Place Hold" link to have those delivered to Mat-Su College:

Lots of results when searching all collections

After clicking "Place Hold" you will be asked for your University username and password. Next, pick the library you want the item sent to. That's it! Once the item arrives at the selected library you will be notified that it is ready for pick-up. This is a free, fast service!
