In 1990, President George H.W. Bush declared November to be “National American Indian Heritage Month," also known as "Native American Heritage Month" or "American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month." It is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse American Indian and Alaska Native histories and heritage, as well as educate ourselves about the historical and lived experiences of indigenous peoples who live(d) on the lands which became the United States.
The Consortium Library has an extensive collection of materials pertaining to Alaska Native and Native American history and culture as well as books written by Alaska Native authors. This guide provides a sampling of the variety of materials we have available. For more information or for help in locating materials, please contact a librarian.
Be sure to check out all the events planned for Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month on the UAA Diversity Programs and Resources website.
