Mat-Su College: Anthropology

A guide for students taking Anthropology courses at Mat-Su College.

Dissertations

A dissertation is a really long paper that students write in order to get their PhD. There are a few nice things about using dissertations:

  • Since they have to be long and detailed, they have lots of information.
  • Dissertations have to contribute new knowledge to a field, so sometimes you'll find a dissertation with unique knowledge that doesn't exist anywhere else.
  • Sometimes dissertations are turned into books. If you can't find the book, maybe you can find the dissertation it's based on!

Using a database called "Dissertations & Theses Global" you can easily search and read many dissertations (and master's degree theses).

Bonus: lots of dissertations from the University of Alaska Fairbanks are included in there, so Alaska topics are pretty well represented!
