Mat-Su College: Anthropology

A guide for students taking Anthropology courses at Mat-Su College.

Using books in your anthropology research

The Mat-Su College library has a strong selection of books on Alaska Natives. You can browse these by going to the E99.E7 section of the second floor book shelves. Don't know what that means? Just ask for help at the library front desk.

To learn how to search the library's catalog (i.e., list of books) you can read below. By searching the library's catalog, you can also find -- and have delivered -- material from other Alaska libraries.

Using the library catalog to find physical items

Start by going to the Mat-Su College Library webpage. Do this by clicking the "Library" link at the top of any Mat-Su College page:

Next, enter your search terms in the "Just Mat-Su" search box:

Press enter. In the search results page you will see matching items at the Mat-Su College library:

To find an item in the library, use its call number (listed underneath the Call # heading). If you're not sure how to use a call number, just ask a librarian for help.

Getting books from other libraries

Getting books from other libraries

After you enter the library catalog, you can switch from searching just Mat-Su College's library to searching most Alaska libraries. Do this by using the drop-down menu next to the search bar:

Now do another searching using your original (or new) search terms. You will see that you now get search results from other libraries. To have these items sent to Mat-Su College (a quick and free service) simply click the "Place Hold" icon:

You will be asked for a card number and PIN. Your card number is student ID number, while your PIN is likely to be the last four digits of your student ID number. After logging in, you will have the choice of selecting which library to have the item delivered to. Make sure to choose Mat-Su College or whatever library you prefer:

Finding eBooks

Some books are only available as ebooks. You can access tens of thousands of ebooks through the University.

Ebook Central is a good, easy to use ebook collection. We recommend starting here.

UAA's eBooks page lists other options. It has a search box to search all ebook sources at once, as well as links to individual eBook collections that you can browse through.
