Black History Month

Black History Month had its origins in the 1920s as a week-long celebration that coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. It was first celebrated as a month-long event in 1970 at Kent State University in Ohio. In 1976 Black History Month was recognized by the President of the United States and has been celebrated every February across the country. Sometimes referred to as African-American History Month, celebrations have included information on important historical events as well as leaders in African-American history.

 This guide provides a sampling of the wide variety of materials the Consortium Library has on African-American history. For more information or for help in locating materials, please contact a librarian.
