GIDEON Searching Tips

Overview

GIDEON (Global Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology Online Network)  is used for diagnosis and as a reference tool in the fields of tropical and infectious diseases, epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy. 

It has images of many bugs and their effect on the human body.  It also includes interactive maps, graphs and linked references.

The microbiology unit can be used to identify a taxon based on its phenotypic characteristics.  View a list of the typical positive and negative reactions for a specific organism and compare the reactions of two or more species.

Microbiology Module

  • Identification and characterization modules for Bacteria, Mycobateria, and Yeasts. 
  • Decision tree begins with entering phenotypic tests which produces an identification list. 
  • Results can be compared and also a list of why an organism doesn't appear can be produced. 
  • Phenotype information can be displayed by clicking that tab.
