Basic and advanced searching options in Cochrane

What is in this Guide

What is the Cochrane Library?

This library brings together international research on the effectiveness of healthcare treatment interventions, including over 6,000 systematic reviews and 650,000 other records.

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is one of six separate databases in the Cochrane Library.  The Cochrane reviews follow a strict methodology to minimize bias. All databases are updated regularly.

Use interlibrary loan to access full-text reviews in this database.

Searching Tips

The default search in Cochrane searches the title and keywords.  If your results are too large, there are other ways to search in this database:

  • Change the default search drop down option  to search for words in the title only (called Record Title)
  • Click the Advanced search button and choose Medical term (MeSH).  This option uses medical subjects linked to subheadings

RefWorks

  • Click the title of the review.
  • Choose Cite this Review.  An option to Save this citation to RefWorks will appear.
