Computer and Network Technology at Mat-Su College

A guide for Mat-Su College Computer and Network Technology courses created in lieu of a paper handout.

Why bother with books?

Many technical books are still published. Here are just a few from the last couple of years that our library owns:

  • The Basics of Web Hacking (2013)
  • Hacking and Penetration Testing with Low Power Devices (2015)
  • Simple Steps to Data Encryption (2013)
  • CompTIA Security+ Rapid Review (2012)
  • Collaboration with Cloud Computing (2014)

And this is just a small subset of our print books. Many new technical books are available through the library as eBooks (see the eBooks tab in this guide for more info).

Using the library catalog to find physical items

Start by getting to the Mat-Su College Library webpage. You can do this by clicking the "Library" link at the top of any Mat-Su College page:

Next, enter your search terms in the "Just Mat-Su" search box:

Press enter. In the search results page you will see books, CDs, movies, and the like:

To find a physical item, locate it using its call number (listed underneath the Call # heading). If you're not familiar with how call numbers are used to arrange items in the library, ask a librarian to help you find the item you want!

You can limit your search results to a certain type of item -- say, movies or video games -- just by clicking the appropriate checkboxs (e.g., "DVD") and then clicking "Include":

Finding eBooks

Many of the library's newest books are ebooks. You can access tens of thousands of ebooks by using the Ebook Central database.

Click here to enter Ebook Central.

Within Ebook Central, enter your search terms and click "Search."

In the search results click the title of any book you wish to read:

When looking at the details of the book you wish to read, you can open up the text of the book by clicking the "Read online" link:

While viewing the ebook you use the magnifying glass to zoom in or out and use the back and forward arrows to move between pages:

Getting the book you want when Mat-Su College library doesn't have it

What should you do when the item you want isn't in the library catalog? Don't fret -- you can still get it!

Just click the "Interlibrary Loan" link on the library website, as seen in the screenshot below.

Then fill out the Interlibrary Loan form with your name, library card number, and information about the item you want. The item will be obtained from whatever library has it. This is a free and relatively fast service.
