What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a bibliographic management software package -- databases designed specifically to handle citation information. It can be used to:

  • Keep track of references
  • Cite references quickly and easily from within a word processor
  • Format and reformat reference lists easily from within a word processor
  • Search a catalog for your reprint files

Export Citations from PubMed

While in PubMed ...Watch Video

  • Select desired citations by checking box to left of each citation.
  • From the Send to menu [1], choose Citation manager [2].
  • Click Create File [3].

Import Citations (exported from PubMed) into Citation Managers

Go to RefWorks...

  • In the toolbar at the top of the page, click References and select Import from the dropdown menu.
  • In the Import References window:
    • Select NLM PubMed from the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down menu.
    • Check that PubMed is selected from the Database drop-down menu.
    • Use the Browse button to Select Text File you saved to your computer in the previous steps.
  • Click the Import button.


You Can Also Export Citations from Google Scholar

Other Citation Managment Software

You can buy an individual subscription to RefWorks or use free web-based software. These are two popular options.
